Virtual reality porn may be next biggest threat to the church, says Christian ministry

Virtual reality pornography may pose the greatest threat to the church because it is not aware of it and is therefore not prepared to deal with it, according to the leader of a Christian ministry.

In a press release, Josh McDowell of the Josh McDowell Ministry said many pastors were not familiar with virtual reality and the multi-billion-dollar industry around it. To help Christians and churches triumph over this threat of sexual addiction, KingdomWorks Studios created the DVD series titled "The Conquer Series: A Battle Plan for Purity," the Christian Broadcasting Network detailed.

The content of the Conquer Series is designed to help people break away from porn. Its website also includes resources that churches can use to organize their own Conquer groups.

"I would personally say from all my knowledge now that pornography's probably the greatest threat to the cause of Christ in the history of the world," McDowell told CBN. "It's that serious. While we're out trying to win the world through Christ -- pastors preaching to the community -- pornography is coming right in the back door."

McDowell was speaking in light of a landmark study that his ministry launched together with the Barna Group in 2016. The research focused on the nature of internet pornography and how it affects the church.

The study found that almost half of young people actively look for porn at least weekly and that more than a quarter of those with ages 25 to 30 saw their first porn content before they reached puberty. Moreover, it was also revealed that 21 percent of youth pastors and 14 percent of pastors who had participated in the research were also experiencing difficulties handling this issue.

In line with this topic, the All Things Possible Ministries' founder, Victor Marx, told CBN recently that porn was the "spiritual ISIS" that was attacking Americans and Christians in the church. He said it is able to turn people into "extremists in depravity" and that this attack is happening 24/7.

Marx added that their ministry aims to follow Jesus Christ's example of being a friend to those who are struggling with sin. He said they were serving as a light in a dark world infiltrated by pornography and sexual addiction.
