A barista working at a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf outlet in Riverside, California refused service to a Christian man who ranted and harassed another customer who happens to be a Muslim woman. The incident was captured on video that has since gone viral on social media.
Kathleen Amina Deady arrived at the coffee shop wearing a hijab and a traditional Muslim dress when the man next to her uttered some offensive remarks. Deady, however, did not back down and asked the man what bothered him.
"I don't like your religion because it says to kill me and I don't want to be killed by you, how's that?" the man remarked.
The encounter, however, got more heated when Deady pointed out that his words were filled with hate. After the man admitted that he's a Christian, she challenged him about the Bible.
"If you're a Christian, let's talk about your Bible. Do you know that in your Bible, Jesus says to bring the people who don't believe and kill them in public?" Deady asked.
The man, however, ignored Deady's question and told her he does not talk to idiots. He also turned his attention to the other customers who told him to get out of the store, but the man screamed at them. When it was his turn to order coffee, the barista and the store's supervisor refused.
Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf released a statement to express its support for the decision of its employees to refuse service to the man. The corporate office stated: "We have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to discrimination of any kind, and have the right to refuse service to any person who makes customers or team members feel endangered in any way."
The coffee chain, which was founded in 1963, has over 1,200 stores located all over the world with its main office in Los Angeles.
