In the midst of rising violence and a deepening moral crisis, thousands of evangelical Christians are preparing to take to the streets of Pachuca, Hidalgo, for the “Great Day of Humility”—a nationwide spiritual movement calling Mexico back to God through public prayer, repentance, and evangelism. Set for Saturday, Aug. 23, this marks the fifth time the city will host the event, which organizers describe as a response to the country’s urgent need for spiritual renewal.
Among the planned activities are unified prayer for Mexico, Christian-themed music, street evangelism, and a leadership seminar.
The event will begin with a seminar for pastors and leaders, where biblical principles will be emphasized to strengthen bonds of fellowship among participants.
Later in the day, hundreds of volunteers plan to take to the streets with bold signs displaying Bible verses and calling people to draw near to God. The outreach will focus on spiritual restoration and the need for life transformation.
According to organizers, multiple groups—primarily composed of young people—will gather at intersections throughout the city to share the good news of the Gospel with passersby.
The event draws participation from members of various evangelical denominations, as well as representatives of Christian organizations.
The Great Day of Humility has been led by Honduran pastor Gerardo Irías since 2013. It is a public prayer initiative held in plazas that brings together thousands of evangelical Christians to kneel and cry out to God for the family, peace, and the spiritual transformation of each nation.
Pastor Irías, who also serves as president of the Evangelical Fellowship of Honduras—which represents 4.5 million Christians—has consistently called not only believers but also government authorities to participate in these gatherings “to humble themselves” and pray to God for their nation.
“We have witnessed miracles, healing, and unity among pastors. The Great Day of Humility has been held in Africa, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Spain, Mexico, and Ecuador. For me, the greatest miracle is when God restores a person, when a family wholeheartedly serves Christ,” Irías said.
Responding to controversy over street closures during large-scale public gatherings, Irías stated that he does so in obedience to a direct command from God.
“The first time the streets were closed in Honduras, people got out of their cars and received Christ. In Tegucigalpa, on one of the busiest roads, they knelt down and asked God for forgiveness,” he said.
Another goal for Pastor Irías is for the Great Day of Humility to be officially recognized in Honduras. “We want it to be declared a national holiday—a day off from work dedicated to family prayer to God,” he said.
In his view, Mexico urgently needs divine help to overcome its moral crisis. “When a country is so gripped by crime and violence, only God can solve those kinds of problems,” he said.
The statistics are grim. According to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), Mexico is the fourth most violent country in the world, behind only Palestine, Myanmar and Syria.
In Pachuca, local coordinator José Luis Ríos said he expects a strong turnout from the evangelical community in Hidalgo, as well as from Christian organizations in neighboring states.
“More than an event, this is a spiritual movement. We want the Church to go beyond the four walls. This is a battle against the forces of evil, and we must face it together,” Ríos said.
He expressed high expectations: “We will flood the city with evangelism. We are working to bring more than 3,000 people to the gathering in Pachuca. It’s about dedicating an entire day as a family to God. We are not promoting any political agenda.”
According to Pastor Ríos, the Great Day of Humility Mexico is a public and collective prayer gathering that invites both Christians and the broader society to humble themselves spiritually and seek divine intervention for the healing of the nation.
On the afternoon of Saturday, Aug. 23, a mass gathering is scheduled at Juárez Plaza in Pachuca, where the message of Christ will be shared with anyone willing to hear a biblical call to reconciliation and repentance.
That site in the capital of Hidalgo will serve as the epicenter for public prayer for peace and petitions to God for the strengthening of families, as well as for the health and social transformation of the Mexican people, organizers say.
