The evangelical community of Costa Rica is celebrating a recent government action that marks a major victory for the pro-life movement in the country. The Costa Rican Evangelical Alliance Federation (FAEC) publicly expressed its satisfaction with the fulfillment of an agreement with President Rodrigo Chaves, who signed the repeal of a previous technical regulation that legalized abortion and enacted a new one that, according to the organization, prioritizes the comprehensive defense of life.
In a statement issued last Wednesday, the FAEC said the new regulatory framework represents a “firm step” toward protecting life. The organization emphasized that this action aligns Costa Rica with fundamental values, protecting both women and unborn children. Pastor Ronald Vargas, president of the FAEC, spoke on behalf of thousands of Costa Ricans.
“We are grateful to God and to the authorities for listening to the cry of thousands of Costa Ricans who defend life. Today, Costa Rica sends a clear message to the world that it is possible to protect both women and unborn children—guided by science, ethics, and compassion,” Vargas said.
President Chaves announced the repeal of the previous regulation two weeks ago during a meeting with pastors and FAEC leaders.
The Federation has maintained that its stance is not merely ideological, but is deeply rooted in technical, scientific, and medical reasoning. Leaders argue that their position has always been grounded in “biological and scientific truths.”
The new regulation introduces key measures that strengthen protection for both the unborn and expectant mothers, affirming that life must be safeguarded at every stage.
It also aims to provide greater clarity and legal support for healthcare professionals in carrying out their duties. The regulation sets clear medical care guidelines and includes disciplinary mechanisms for cases of noncompliance.
One of the most notable advances is that Costa Rica now has a specific provision for conscientious objection—a long-standing demand from the healthcare sector and pro-life advocates. This allows medical professionals to follow their ethical and moral convictions without fear of retaliation.
“We thank the president for keeping his word so decisively. This is an unprecedented step forward for a Costa Rica that, now more than ever, demands integrity,” Pastor Vargas said.
The FAEC reaffirmed its commitment to continue promoting the defense of life, the family, and the principles that strengthen the nation, calling on Costa Ricans to build a country where science, ethics, and truth form the foundation of public decision-making.
