Congressman José Tomás Zambrano Molina of the National Party of Honduras has been elected and sworn in as president of the National Congress, becoming one of the leading figures of the new legislative cycle. An evangelical Christian, Zambrano’s personal story includes a prophetic word spoken more than two decades ago that his family now associates with the office he holds.
According to El Heraldo of Honduras, Zambrano’s mother, Maura Luz Molina Galo, recalls an episode from early 2000. During a gathering of believers at a restaurant, a woman pointed to her son, then 18, and spoke words that left a lasting impression on the family: “I see you dressed elegantly, I see you in a suit, and I see you seated on a king’s chair.”
Zambrano entered the room quietly that morning, without speaking or drawing attention. “It wasn’t just any word. It was something that was being planted,” his mother said.
Zambrano assumed the presidency of the National Congress on Sunday, Jan. 25, a position that ranks third in Honduras’ institutional line of authority. The new legislative term begins amid political tensions and longstanding structural challenges.
A lawmaker representing the department of Valle, Zambrano has served continuously in Congress since 2010 and has more than a decade of legislative experience.
In his first public statements, Zambrano emphasized dialogue and consensus-building as priorities for restoring the functionality of Congress. He said decisions should be reached “through votes and dialogue,” not imposed by force, and said he intends to build cooperation across party lines.
During the opening session of the new Congress, Pastor Gerardo Irías, president of the Evangelical Fellowship of Honduras, offered a public prayer for Zambrano and other lawmakers. He said the goal was to “honor God above all things” and to bless congressional leaders, whom he described as bearing “a great responsibility to guide this nation.”
Irías cited Isaiah 1:26, which speaks of restoring justice and faithful leadership.
He said Honduras has faced years of division and hardship, adding that lawmakers now have an opportunity to promote unity and contribute to peace. Irías said evangelicals expect the new Congress to respect God, respect Scripture and pass laws consistent with the country’s biblical and moral principles.
He added that the Evangelical Fellowship will continue praying for and monitoring the work of the legislature.
In the inaugural session, Zambrano said Congress will seek to work cooperatively with the executive branch through a legislative agenda that includes proposals from multiple caucuses and focuses on improving public well-being.
He reiterated calls for dialogue and tolerance, saying democratic debate and voting should replace the political confrontations that marked the previous term. The opening of the 2026–2030 legislature, marked by heightened security and an atmosphere of order, aimed to project stability and democratic normalcy.
