A new animated film telling the story of Jesus through the eyes of the apostle John is set to debut in U.S. theaters Sept. 5. Light of the World presents the gospel in a family-friendly, hand-drawn 2D cartoon format.

Set around 30 A.D., the film portrays crowds awaiting the Messiah and follows the first disciples — John, James, Andrew, Peter and others — as they recognize something unique about Jesus and begin to follow him through his ministry, crucifixion and resurrection.

The project was produced by The Salvation Poem Project, a nonprofit creative studio focused on sharing the message of Jesus Christ worldwide.

“There is a timeless artistry that comes only from hand-drawn, 2D animation, and that seems fitting for telling the timeless story of Jesus in Light of the World,” the producers said in a release. “We believe Light of the World will connect with everyone, everywhere.”

Christian Daily International previously reported in May that popular worship duo Shane & Shane released a new single and music video titled “Light of the World Medley”, inspired by the forthcoming animated film.

The song was created in partnership with The Salvation Poem Project and is being positioned as the musical and spiritual anchor for the film’s message of redemption and hope. Blending their signature acoustic-driven style with lyrical themes centered on the life of Jesus Christ, Shane & Shane’s medley begins with “The Salvation Poem”, originally written by Matt and Sherry McPherson, and transitions into a newly composed worship track.

“It’s been wonderful to partner with Shane & Shane as they reimagine ‘The Salvation Poem’ within this powerful new medley,” said Matt McPherson, founder of The Salvation Poem Project, at the time. “Our hope is that this version will reach even more people and guide them toward a personal relationship with Christ.”

“Light of the World brings the gospel to life in a way that stirs both the heart and the imagination,” Shane & Shane said in a joint statement. “As worship leaders, it was a joy to create music that echoes that story—we hope it leads people into a deeper encounter with who Jesus really is.”

Producer Brennan McPherson praised the duo’s contribution, saying, “Shane & Shane captured the heart of this film with such sincerity. Their music feels like an extension of the film itself—drawing people in and helping them experience the gospel in a fresh, unforgettable way.”

Shane & Shane, comprised of Shane Barnard and Shane Everett, have spent more than 15 years writing biblically inspired worship music and leading worship events around the U.S. Known for their rich harmonies and gospel-centered lyrics, the duo continues to produce music aimed at encouraging believers and glorifying God.

The Salvation Poem Project, which has partnered on this initiative, is a global media ministry that produces multimedia resources to share the message of Jesus. Its content has been translated into nearly 100 languages and has reached hundreds of millions around the world.
