Sony Pictures’ faith-based division AFFIRM Films said its new drama “Soul on Fire” has earned an “A” CinemaScore and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, signaling exceptional word-of-mouth following its opening weekend in theaters nationwide.

The film, based on the bestselling memoir “On Fire” by John O’Leary, tells the true story of O’Leary’s near-fatal childhood accident and his journey of recovery, faith, and purpose. “Soul on Fire” opened Oct. 10 and is directed by Sean McNamara, known for “Soul Surfer” and “Reagan.”

“Few honors mean more than the voice of the audience,” O’Leary said in a statement. “To see people respond with such hope and joy reminds me of why we made this movie in the first place. Soul on Fire isn’t just my story; it’s an invitation to live boldly after the fire.”

McNamara said the audience response affirmed the team’s creative goals. “From the beginning, our prayer was to tell a truthful, life-giving story,” he said. “An ‘A’ CinemaScore and a 98% audience rating affirm that the film is connecting where it matters most — in the hearts of moviegoers.”

The film stars Joel Courtney (“Jesus Revolution,” “Super 8”), John Corbett (“My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” “All Saints”), Stephanie Szostak (“A Million Little Things”), Masey McLain (“The Baxters”), DeVon Franklin (“Jesus Revolution”), and William H. Macy (“Fargo”). It recounts O’Leary’s recovery from severe burns at age nine and how the compassion of family, faith, and Baseball Hall of Fame broadcaster Jack Buck helped shape his mission to inspire others.

Written by Gregory Poirier and produced by David Brookwell, Sean McNamara, Margaret French Isaac, and J. Todd Harris, the film’s executive producers include O’Leary and several long-time collaborators.

AFFIRM Films, launched in 2007, has produced or distributed a number of high-grossing inspirational titles, including “Soul Surfer,” “War Room,” “Heaven Is for Real,” and “Miracles from Heaven.” The label operates under Sony Pictures Entertainment, which is based in Culver City, California.
