The Communion of Churches in Korea (CCIK) has initiated efforts to raise funds for emergency relief for Sri Lanka, where severe flooding and landslides have caused major loss of life.
CCIK's Representative President Rev. Chun Hwan highlighted that Sri Lanka has suffered widespread inundation and landslides triggered by strong winds and heavy rains from Cyclone Dithwa, resulting in the worst devastation the country has seen in decades.
On Dec. 6, CCIK sent an urgent notice to member denominations and affiliated organizations, calling for prayer and participation in a relief offering for Sri Lanka. The notice stated, “We ask that you pray for Sri Lanka during the Sunday worship service on the 7th and join in contributing to the disaster relief offering.”
The relief initiative follows an official request from the National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka. CCIK plans to receive relief offerings from member denominations and organizations through Dec. 15 and deliver them directly to the NCEASL.
Sri Lankan authorities report more than 600 deaths, 214 people missing, and more than 230,000 displaced due to the cyclone that struck in late November. CCIK said the disaster “is being recorded as the most severe in 70 years” and called for urgent prayer and support.
