The 16th edition of the StopArmut Conference is set to focus on conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and reconciliation work.

The event, titled "Swords to Plowshares - Responses to Armed Conflict," will take place on Nov. 1 at the Arche Winterthur in Winterthur, Switzerland.

Hosted by the StopArmut (Stop Poverty) initiative, the conference connects the issues of armed conflict with the broader goal of poverty alleviation.

The conference theme is informed by the current global situation, with the International Committee of the Red Cross reporting more than 120 armed conflicts worldwide.

“What does it mean for us as citizens and believers today? For civil society, the churches, and the state?” organizers asked in a press release for the event.

“There are many possible responses to the armed conflicts around the world, but doing nothing is certainly not the solution. This year's StopArmut conference explores the topics of peacebuilding and reconciliation and discusses options for action.”

The name itself signals a focus on economic and social development. By dedicating its program to conflict resolution, the event highlights a foundational element of addressing global poverty, as armed conflicts are a major contributor to economic disruption, displacement, and the destruction of infrastructure. The conference will provide a forum to discuss how civil society, churches, and the state can respond to these challenges.

The program includes presentations and workshops designed to offer different perspectives on peace and reconciliation. Keynote addresses will be delivered by two leading experts: Laurent Goetschel, Director of the Swiss peace research institute Swisspeace, and Anne Reitsema, Director of Medair, a humanitarian relief organization. Their presentations will be followed by a series of workshops led by experts in various fields.

An exhibition area will feature information stands from organizations involved in peace and development cooperation. This space is intended to facilitate networking and the sharing of information about tangible ways to engage with the issues discussed.

In addition to the educational components, the conference will feature artistic and cultural elements. The band Songs of Peace will provide musical highlights, and Daniel Hedinger from the Hedinger art forge will demonstrate the craft of blacksmithing. This demonstration offers a literal interpretation of the conference's title, illustrating the transformation of materials.

According to the press release, the conference is open to all who wish to learn, network, and get involved in promoting peace. It aims to present "food for thought and concrete approaches for action," moving beyond feelings of powerlessness and toward practical solutions.

The event serves as a platform for discussion and collaboration, providing attendees with resources and information to respond to the global reality of armed conflict. The diverse program is structured to address the topic from multiple angles, from high-level theoretical perspectives to on-the-ground humanitarian efforts.
