Newest discoveries in mainstream biology strengthen rather than weaken the truth of Christianity, according to eminent scientist Sy Garte, who argues that the latest research points directly to God’s creative power.
Garte has served as a tenured professor at New York University, Rutgers University and the University of Pittsburgh, division director at the Center for Scientific Review of the National Institutes of Health, and interim vice president for research at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He is also a committed Christian and co-editor of God & Nature Magazine for the American Scientific Affiliation.
His new book, Beyond Evolution: How New Discoveries in the Science of Life Point to God, will be released Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2025, by Tyndale House.
Speaking to Christian Daily International ahead of its publication, Garte said his purpose was to reassure Christians troubled by the common atheistic claim that evolution destroys the meaning of Genesis and forces believers to choose between science and faith.
“Many books have been written on Christian faith/science interaction, stressing the compatibility or harmony between the two,” Garte said.
“The premise of this book is that the mainstream science of biology is not only compatible with Christian faith but is a strong evidential pointer to God’s majesty. Using clear summaries of current research, I call for a rejection of the ideology of reductionist naturalism that has led to a roadblock in scientific progress.”
Though he modestly states the book requires “no advanced knowledge of biology beyond high-school level,” Garte brings the perspective of a seasoned biochemist, with expertise in molecular biology and genetics. His decades of laboratory work and research provide the foundation for what he presents as an accessible yet scientifically accurate narrative.
A key aim, Garte said, is to encourage unity among Christians on the question of how science relates to faith, while also making recent biological discoveries more widely known among lay believers.
“These discoveries highlight the validity of formerly forbidden ideas like cognition, chaos, fractals, teleology, and agency in all of life,” he said.
“These revolutionary ideas could be incorporated into standard biological theory to understand the origin of life, the exceptionalism of humanity, and the nature of human consciousness.”
Garte challenges claims by skeptics who argue that Darwin’s theory of natural selection fully explains the complexity of life. While affirming that evolution is “undeniably valid,” he contends that it depends on a deeper principle: the universal biological property of inheritance through highly accurate self-replication.
“Arguments among Christians about the truth of biological evolution are of little value, and serve only to sow division within the Church,” Garte said.
“The theory of evolution is in rapid flux and the old neo-Darwinian paradigm that so many lay people argue for and against is no longer relevant. Modern evolutionary theory is consistent with a Biblical worldview and can be used as an apologetic argument for a Creator God,” he added.
“I describe how this emerging approach to the science of life will be in perfect harmony with Christian theology and point to the divine creator of all we know.”
Garte hopes his book will reach not only Christians concerned about the relationship between faith and science but also those with a broader interest in biology and the origin of life.
“Readers will come away with an understanding that there is nothing in biological science that conflicts with Christianity, but to the contrary, what we know about life fully supports biblically sound faith in God,” he said.
Writing in a Substack update, Garte emphasized that evolution itself is neither atheistic nor antibiblical.
“In reality the theory of evolution is neither atheistic nor antibiblical—it is fully consistent with the existence and omnipotence of a divine creator,” he wrote.
“Furthermore, contrary to common belief, evolution by natural selection is not the most important principle of the life sciences but the result of more fundamental, uniquely biological processes. I will show you why the time has come to stop fighting over the reality of evolution among Christians.”
