Colombia’s leading evangelical body has called for a national day of fasting and prayer on Friday, urging Christians to seek divine guidance and peace for the country amid renewed diplomatic engagement between Colombia and the United States.
The Evangelical Confederation of Colombia, known as CEDECOL, said the prayer initiative comes at a critical moment for the nation, as President Gustavo Petro and U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed a renewed diplomatic dialogue following a lengthy phone conversation earlier this week.
CEDECOL invited churches and believers across Colombia to unite in prayer and fasting, calling on Christians to intercede for national leadership, security challenges and social stability. “We firmly believe that when the people of God humble themselves, pray and seek His face, He responds with direction, mercy and restoration for the nation,” the organization said in a statement.
The call follows a more than hourlong phone conversation between Petro and Trump, which both leaders described as constructive. According to reports by The Christian Post Spanish edition, the two presidents agreed to hold a future meeting in Washington to address drug trafficking and recent tensions that have strained bilateral relations.
Trump said Petro contacted him to explain Colombia’s position on narcotics policy and other areas of disagreement, describing the exchange as positive. Petro, for his part, defended his government’s efforts against organized crime and said misinformation had shaped perceptions of Colombia within the U.S. administration.
While political leaders emphasized dialogue as a path forward, Colombian evangelical leaders framed the moment as one requiring spiritual reflection and unity. CEDECOL said the prayer initiative seeks to place national affairs before God, particularly as decisions affecting regional security and internal peace remain unresolved.
Petro also addressed the issue publicly in Bogotá, stressing the importance of truth in international relations and suggesting that inaccurate information had influenced recent statements about Colombia. He reiterated that peace and social justice remain central priorities for his administration.
